Soft Opening is a freeform music night with Deejay Robert Rhymin’, who plays a loose mix of genres; things with a good beat. Disco, funk, psych, afrobeat, new wave, rap, etcetera. Generally held on the last Friday of each month at Myrtle—a friendly local bar with nice vintage decor—it’s the kind of place where you might meet someone new. Not specifically a dance night, but sometimes people shake loose a bit.

The name Soft Opening comes from RR’s first time at the venue, during their soft opening on September 15, 2023. Each month’s poster features the silhouette of a porcelain or glass insulator. Find us on Craigslist!

Some songs I have played that caused people to dance include Casual Friday by Black Leotard Front, It Should Have Been You by Gwen Guthrie, and Is it All Over My Face by Loose Joints. Earlier in the night, people have said thanks for playing tracks like Gil Scott-Heron’s B-Movie, Endless Boogie, Royal Trux, and Spacemen 3.
